Graduating from higher education is a great accomplishment and should be a milestone for a young person. But like many of my friends in the United States who were not able to get jobs after graduation during the last economic downturn, youth in Ethiopia have had to deal with this reality since they were born. Tawfiq Dandeir is 24 years old and he worked hard to get his education. But like many other students, there were no jobs to be found when he was done. When he got the opportunity to become manager of the Lidita Youth Center in his childhood neighborhood, District 7, things changed for him and for his community. There is no future in that.

from our Past Events
For over 50 years, the Watts neighborhood has been a center of crime and turmoil in the Los Angeles area. The damage was more far-reaching than just the physical, however, and lasted long after the final fires were extinguished. The rampant poverty following the riots allowed for the power and numbers of local gangs to swell. The streets of Watts became a battlefield between the Bloods and the Crips — the most notorious gang rivalry in history — and ground-zero of the explosion of gang violence in L. Locals can still recall the fear and daily sounds of gunfire.
In addition the center has lent consistent support to crime-prevention awareness in the community and is playing an active role in helping find a solution to gang-activity among teenagers in the area. At the Dream Center of Lakeland, we believe that the best way we can help others is by starting right where we are. That's why, everyday at the Dream Center, community members and volunteers come together to share lives and hope with each other. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about the Dream Center of Lakeland.
