Holes on bottom of feet
Pitted keratolysis also known as Keratolysis plantare sulcatum, Keratoma plantare sulcatum, and Ringed keratolysis is a bacterial skin infection of the foot. The infection is caused by Corynebacterium species bacteria and sometimes Kytococcus sedentarius. Skin biopsy specimens are not usually utilized, as the diagnosis of pitted keratolysis is often made by visual examination and recognition of the characteristic odor. Wood's lamp examination results are inconsistent. Treatment of pitted keratolysis requires the application of antibiotics to the skin such as benzoyl peroxide , clindamycin , erythromycin , fusidic acid , or mupirocin.

Pitted keratolysis is a descriptive title for a superficial bacterial skin infection that affects the soles of the feet, and less often, the palms of the hands. It is one of the causes of smelly feet. Pitted keratolysis is caused by several bacterial species, including corynebacteria, Dermatophilus congolensis , Kytococcus sedentarius , actinomyces and streptomyces. The bacteria proliferate in moist conditions. The pitting is due to destruction of the horny cells stratum corneum by protease enzymes produced by the bacteria.
