The tempest papers focusing on the importance of mirandas virginity
The patriarchy that Prospero enforces is not an independent or coherent system; rather, it reacts to its opposite, which Sycorax symbolizes. While one can analyze male characters directly by their actions on stage, one can analyze Sycorax only by her influence on these characters. With Sycorax absent, Prospero envisions her as his female opposite. Through Prospero, Sycorax symbolizes everything that may question patriarchy. In The Tempest , the only woman on stage is Miranda, who is both assaulted and honored for her virginity. According to Orgel, The Tempest provides enough evidence about the women in the play for us to speculate about them, but not enough for us to make any justified conclusions or arguments.

The lack of female characters in The Tempest says a lot about how the men in the play imagine the role of women in society. Perhaps the most obvious instance where a male character explicitly situates women in a broad social vision occurs when Gonzalo describes how he would run the island if he had an opportunity to rule. Aside from the goddesses Iris, Ceres, and Juno, who are non-human projections created by the male spirit Ariel, the only female character with an active role in the play is Miranda.
