Holy eucharist asian perspective
The reception of Holy Communion is currently a topic of great controversy in the Catholic Church. Bishops generally permit politicians who cross Catholic teaching on grave issues in their public words and actions to continue to receive the Eucharist, and Cardinal Walter Kasper has recently proposed permitting civilly divorced and remarried Catholics to receive the Eucharist as well, an idea that will be taken up at the Synod on the Family in October. One one hand, the Church does teach that Catholics have a general right to the sacraments. On the other hand, the Church also teaches that there are situations in which the sacraments are not to be given or received. Canon thus addresses ministers of the sacrament, practically speaking bishops and priests, while canon addresses would-be communicants. But in an antinomian age in which refusing anyone anything is seen as mean, adverting to canon law feels like legalism to many.

The Eucharist and the story of Israel
Eucharist, Communion and Solidarity
I became aware of this study the very next day via Bishop Robert Barron, who released a brief video of his initial reaction to the survey. He expressed anger and disappointment at himself and others who share in the task of teaching the faith in our parishes and schools. There has, understandably, been an explosion of Catholic commentary in the weeks following, with people doing their best to get their minds around the simple fact that many, if not most, Catholics in the U. The clarion call from most commentators was essentially all the same: better catechesis; no dumbing down the Faith; emphasis on core teachings; better liturgy, which translates to greater reverence for the Eucharist receiving on the tongue, restore the altar-rails, get back to preaching hard truths, and so on. The answer to that question comes, I think, on the heels of a still more basic one: What exactly is the Eucharist? If one were to add up all the great points about this or that saint, this or that spiritual principle, this or that theological point made by Bishop Barron over the years, they would all still fall short in importance compare to these words:.

Ecumenism and the Eucharist
By uniting ourselves with the sacred rite of the Mass, and above all by receiving Holy Communion, we enter into the sacrifice of Christ. We mystically die with the divine Victim and rise again with Him to new life in God. We are freed from our sins, we are once again pleasing to God, and we receive grace to follow Him more generously in the life of charity and fraternal union which is the life of His Mystical Body. There has been conversation here and there this week about a recent Pew Research survey suggesting that barely a quarter of Catholics believe in the Real Presence of the Eucharist.
The diocese proposed this exploration the better to celebrate the sacrament and to live more fruitfully Christ's "new commandment" that we "love one another". The Christians of that time thus expressed in a dramatic way the unbreakable link between the mystery of the hidden presence of God and the praxis of serving the cause of peace, of Christians being peace. For the early Christians, there was no difference between what today is often distinguished as orthodoxy and orthopraxis, as right doctrine and right action.
